This study examines the intrapersonal processes of a speaker who passes rumors to listeners in everydayconversations, from the perspective of three rumor types: daily-type, anxiety-type, and humor-type（ Takenaka& Matsui, 2007）. Undergraduates（ N = 544） answered a questionnaire that included items on the frequencyof passing rumors, intentions of passing and confirming rumors, attributes of the rumor（ humor, anxiety,certainty, importance, credulity）, and purposes of the rumor（ for entertainment, to facilitate aninteresting conversation, to supplement information, to gather information）. Results of analyses suggestedthat the effects of the attributes and purpose of the rumor on the intentions of passing rumors differed amongthe three rumor types. Thus, the study showed that the approach of classifying rumors into three was appropriatefor examining factors influencing the passing of a rumor.
