The morphology and nucleation of sodium borohydride crystals were studied in batch experiments. The nucleation and crystal morphology were monitored from saturated solutions at two different rates of supercooling (10℃/h and 1℃/h). Nucleation was detected at 39℃ and 33℃ of temperature range, respectively. Two kinds of crystal morphologies were observed, hexagonal and tetragonal. The hexagonal morphology was assumed to be of NaBH4 crystal and the tetragonal of sodium metaborate tetrahydrate (NaBO2.・4H2O) crystal. This assumption was made after morphology verification from pure NaBO2.・4H2O solutions. Hydrogen generation from NaBH4 hydrolysis and solubility measurements of NaBH4 and NaBO2.・4H2O were also performed.
