In the alpine zone of Mt. Norikura, 22 families and 168 species of Lepidoptera were recorded on July 17-19, 2010 and August 4-6, 2011. Investigations using route census were performed for 5 days at 3 areas from Kikyougahara (altitude 2702 m) to Oonyuike (altitude 2342 m), to Gonoike (altitude 2720 m) and to Hirayu route (altitude 2600 m) . Investigations using the light traps were performed at the same place at Kikyougahara for 3 days. The ratio of the number of diurnal alpine species to the total number of species recorded on the mountain was 15.38 and 27.27 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The ratio of the total number of diurnal alpine species individuals to the total number of species individuals on the mountain was 4.17 and 43.70 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The ratio of the number of nocturnal alpine species to the total number of species recorded on the mountain was 7.14 and 10.45 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The ratio of the total number of nocturnal alpine species individuals to the total number of species individuals on the mountain was 3.17 and 13.43 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The habits of some species were investigated. Many individuals of Nemophora ochsenheimerella (= N. japanaloina) were observed flying over Pinus pumila. Six individuals of Papestra biren and Cucullia lucifuga flew into the light trap. The biology of some species was studied in this investigation, such as the sucking behavior of Clepsis monticolana Kawabe and Sympistis heliophila (Paykull). The larvae of Dysstroma citratum nyiwonis (Matsumura) and Cucullia lucifuga (Denis & Schiffermuller) were collected from Artemisia unalaskensis. Females of Clepsis jinboi Kawabe laid eggs in a plastic vial and the hatched larvae fed safely on Artemisia indica. The larval and pupal stages of Clepsis jinboi were recorded for the first time.
