The paper curl generated in the fusing process of electro-photographic printers heavily influences the paper feeding and causes paper jams, print quality degradation, and inconsistent paper delivery. In the fuser unit without the heater on the backup roller side -typically in small-sized printers-, the paper curls toward the low temperature backup roller, especially just after booting. In this paper, to reveal the relationship between the curl and moisture distribution of the paper quantitatively, a test bed machine which has the fuser-like heater and sensors for measuring moisture distribution is developed. By investigating on the relation between paper sides' temperature difference and amount of evaporation, it is shown that the curl generated through paper shrinkage difference caused by moisture distribution difference. Finally we propose a curl generation model based on the moisture distribution difference.
