The flavonoid compounds of larchwood (Larix leptolepis} were investigated and the results were summarized as follows : 1. The distribution patterns of flavonoid compounds within a trunk at the lower parts were the same as those described in literatures. Namely, though the content of flavonoid compounds was extremely low in sapwood, it reached maximum at sapwood-heartwood boundary or its adjacent heartwood, and decreased gradually toward the pith. But at the part of the tree at 12.3 m in height from the ground, the distribution pattern was not similar to those of lower parts: the content of flavonoid compounds reached maximum not at the annual ring group containing the sapwood-heartwood boundary or adjacent heartwood, but at inner heartwood (Fig. 4 ). The fact that the contents of flavanonols in the heartwoods (ARG 10〜12) at different parts of the tree were almost constant above the base of the tree (1.6〜1.8%) may suggest that the abilities of biosynthesis of the flavanonols in the different parts of the trunk are not changed with height from the ground, 2. The earlywood generally contained more methanol extractives and flavonoid compounds than the latewood based on dry weight of wood (Table2〜4). 3. While the methanol extractives from the heartwood consisted mainly of taxifolin and UV absorption maximum of the methanol solution of the extractives was at 290 mμ, those from the sapwood seemed mainly to be made up of other compounds and UV absorption maximum of the methanol solution of them was at 282 mμ (Fig. 3). 4. The sapwood extractives (9.5g) were separated into its components by means of silica gel column chromatography using ethyl acetate saturated with water as developing solvents. In the first fraction (1〜1.5g), taxifolin and aromadendrin were detected on TLC, and from the second fraction (1.4g), a glycosides of taxifolin was isolated from the mixture of glycosides which showed the UV absorption maximum at 281 mμ. The third fraction (6g) was eluated from the column by methanol and water. The dried effluent was red color and UV absorption spectrum of it showed absorption maximum at 282 mμ. The third fraction contained various sugars in which sucrose, galactose, glucose, fructose, mannose, and xylose were detected and estimated by GLC (totaled to 13% of the fraction). Total effluents amounted to 8.4〜8.9 g, and 1.1〜0.6g of the methanol extractives remained in the column, probably being adsorbed by silica gel. 5. The knowledg of the distribution of flavonoid compounds within the trunk and that of the components of the sapwood extractives should aid in establishing biological relationships and in furthering knowledge on heartwood formation.
