Some lichens (Cladonia spp) appeared on thatched roofs in the early stage of succession. They were then replaced by such bryophytes as Bryum argenteum, Dicranodontium denudatum, and Bryum capillare. As the thatch became rotten and retained greater moisture, Hypnum plumaeforme dominated over these smaller, xerophilous mosses. Subsequently, some phanerogams appeared, became increasingly conspicuous and finally overwhelmed the lichens and bryophytes.
