Regulatory science means scientific knowledge for the political determinations. Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is going to promote initiatives of regulatory science in food safety and plant protection. Our research activities in Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat and barley is recognized to be advanced cases of regulatory science. In Japan, Food Sanitation Council in the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare determined provisional guidelines for DON content in unpolished wheat grains as 1.1 ppm in 2002. Therefore, the endpoint of our research had to be changed from controlling disease severity to reduction of mycotoxin contamination. A national FHB research project supported by the MAFF began to achieve this objective. The control practice to reduce mycotoxin contamination should be evidence based. It is important for producers to realize that good agricultural practice (GAP) represent the primary line of defense against contamination of cereals with mycotoxins. The final target of the project was to make evidence-based GAP for the reduction of mycotoxin contamination. This paper aims to introduce our present studies and prospect for the risk management based on the guideline for control of FHB.
