In 1928, O. Klein and Y. Nishina derived a formula for the differential cross section of Compton scattering. Subsequently, Nishina studied the double Compton scattering for the purpose of bringing out the characteristic light polarization in Dirac's theory of electron which is quite distinct from that of the classical theory of spinless electron, and also from that of the theory based on Klein-Gordon equation. In the present paper, a brief account of these two works is given. How they derived the formulas is then analyzed, based mainly on the source materials of Nishina preserved in the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN). It is shown that various attempts were made, not all of which were explicitly described in their papers. For instance, Klein devised a different method to find the solution of Dirac equation in the presence of electro-magnetic radiation. They also tried to calculate the current density induced by incident light in another way. A more concrete way of calculation using an explicit representation of Dirac matrices was adopted in an early stage. Different methods of treating final spin states of electron were tried. Considerable efforts were made to find the solution of Dirac equation in a static magnetic field, also. Nishina performed calculations for the scattering of elliptically polarized light in more detail than he presented in his paper. It is to be noted that in the course of their works, significant improvements had been made in their methods of treating spin operators and spin states of electron.
