Alexandr Porphyrievich BORODIN (1833-1887), famous Russian composer, who has gained place in history as a creative genius was by profession a chemist and worked as an active and devoted professor of chemistry at the Medical Academy in the capital city, St. Petersbourg throughout his life until his sudden death. In this article the author has tried to inquire into and evaluate all his scientific publications written in Russian, German, Italian and French languages (in total over forty in number). Inspired by his great teacher, N. N. ZININ, BORODIN was mainly occupied with problems of organic chemistry (amines, aldehydes, etc.) synthesizing a number of new compounds. Those published in German and French journals were frequently recorded in Beilsteins Handbuch der organischen Chemie. BORODIN was a skillful and careful experimentalist and had a keen insight into various subjects. He gained a degree of doctor of medicine by his discovery of the similarity of phosphoric and arsenic acids in the action on the human body. It is noteworthy that his discovery was made many years earlier than the foundation of the periodic system of chemical elements. His researches on the anomaly of fluorine in the halogen family led to preparing benzoyl fluoride for the first time. Having found the normal behavior of fluorine in organic compounds, he conducted reactions of alkali fluorides with various organic acids-these reactions are quoted in Gmelins Handbuch der anorganischen Chemie-and thus confirmed the correctness of his view. As an official he concerned himself in later years in medico-chemical and pharmacologicaI problems and business, publishing a number of significant papers. In conclusion, BORODIN was also in chemistry a distinguished personality. If he worked in"Europe," where ample equipments and assistants were available, he must have come to fame not inferior to such notable chemists as WURTZ and KEKULE.
