In 1851 the Hakubutsu Tsusho, which was written by D. J. Macgowan(瑪高温, 1814-1893), was published in China. In Japan there are at least two kinds of manuscripts, which are the Denki Tsuhyo and the Hakubutsu Tsusho. But the contents of ones had been little known. In this paper it is mentioned that the Denki Tsuhyo and the Hakubutsu Tsusho are the same, and the paper gives a summary of manuscript. The text of the manuscript consists of six chapters. In chap. 1 electrostatic phenomena are described, in chap. 2 electrical machine and its applications, in chap. 3 battery and its applications, in chap. 4 magnetism and its applications, in chap. 5 electromagnetic induction and its applications, and in chap. 6 telegraphs. It is largest feature in the book that the telegraphs for Chinese character are described in the 6 chapter.
