Eigenfrequencies of the structures which are modified by design changes are generally different from those of original structures, because the phase and amplitude of waves are changed by the modification of cross-section and discontinuities of waveguides. This paper shows sensitivity of an eigenfrequency to modification is determined by the phase of waves around over the modified structure at a frequency corresponding to the eigenfrequency of the original structure. Firstly, it is shown that an eigenfrequency of a one-dimensional structure which is coupled by two different cross-sectional rods can be calculated by wave approach. The method is then verified by comparing eigenfrequencies calculated by the method with those analyzed by primary theory of rods, and with those computed by finite element model. Finally, the mechanism of determination of eiegenfrequncy is explained by the viewpoint of the phase changes of each wave.
