The narration of the "sin" of Fujitsubo and Genji is at the core of the first part of The Tale of Genji. This study examines the spaces of Fujitsubo's villa and the Sanjo-no-miya in order to investigate the narration of this intertwined "sin." The erotic and "sinful" body of the sick Fujitsubo is etched into the space of Sanjo-no-miya. Moreover, the conception and birth of Genji's "sinful" child Rezei takes place at Sanjo-no-miya. Fujitsubo separates from the passionate world of Genji and takes Buddhist orders for the sake of her "sinful" son Reizei's standing, and as a nun constructs a Buddhist temple as a place to "go to." However, since there is already a temple at Sanjo-no-miya, two temples end up standing side-by-side. As I examine the significance of Fujistubo's construction of a new temple, I explore the problem of "sin" in the space of Sanjo-no-miya.
