Precedent studies about "the Kaimami" in the Tale of GENJI's chapter "Nowaki" have considered Yugiri's "gaze" as important because many scenes in this chapter are described from his viewpoint. "The Kaimami" in the chapter "Nowaki" does, however, cause no adultery ; it means that his "Kaimami" has no effect. When Yugiri looks at Murasaki-no-ue for the first time in this chapter, she watches flowers in the garden from a margin of her mansion. Considering that he sees women comparing them with Murasaki-no-ue and flowers at the other scenes of "Kaimami" that follow, we can say that her "gaze" triggers all the "Kaimamis" that he does. She gives him a "gaze" and decides patterns of his thinking. Without Murasaki-no-ue's "gaze", no "Kaimami" would happen. And her "gaze" wakes that of Yugiri and becomes a cause of being watched by him ; this fact reveals that the mistress of Rokujyouin, Murasaki-no-ue has unconsciously elements that menace Rokujyouin. Reading of the "Nowaki" chapter shows that the woman has a heretical element of which she isn't conscious herself.
