Alkaline tellurites (M2TeO3, M=Li, Na) were prepared by the following method; tellurium dioxide (TeO2) powder was added to the solution of alkaline carbonate (M2CO3, M=Li, Na) and heated to dryness. The ratios of alkaline metal to tellurium were 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2 in mole. The samples obtained by the method were evaluated with TG-DTA and XRD. As results, carbonate-free tellurites were produced in the mole ratio of 1:2. A sample obtained from lithium carbonate was a mixture of TeO2 and lithium tellurite (Li2TeO3) while one obtained from sodium carbonate was one of TeO2 and sodium tetratellurite (Na2Te4O9). Reaction mechanism between carbonate and tellurium dioxide was discussed. Separations of Li2TeO3 and Na2Te4O9 from the samples were also discussed.
