The surface electromyography (SEMG) technique with multiple surface electrodes oriented in two dimensions, termed the multi-channel or high-density SEMG technique, has recently been developed and applied in health, sports, and medical research areas. Since this novel SEMG technique can detect action potentials from large number of MUs and analyze detailed MU activation properties by assessing the spatio-temporal distribution of the SEMG signal, it provides more detailed information on the neuromuscular system compared with the standard SEMG technique employing a single pair of electrodes. This article reviews recently published studies using the multi-channel SEMG technique for investigating: 1) a region-specific functional role within a single muscle, 2) the MU recruitment pattern, and 3) detailed firing properties of individual MUs.
