• Trial practices in thesis-writing,based on the English for Specific Purpose(ESP)concept have been introduced as a possible way forward for selected students who demonstrate weaknesses in dealing with the existing English for General Purpose(EGP)classes.The ESP approach uses a comparatively limited vocabulary of words and phrases,thus enabling the students to feel more comfortable,and so recover from the trauma associated with using English under the harsh"sink or swim"conditions when writing up their own thesis.As the English language can act as an important gateway to higher education,increased social mobility,and sccess to technological updates,this kind of trial could also be great benefit to graduates from any department,leading to the practical English proficiency development as part of a lifeling engineering education programme under the JABEE scheme.
