On March 11, 2011, when this day-care center on the country's northeastern coast was hit by the earthquake, the children at the center were all taken to high ground as the tsunami approached. All of them escaped unharmed. Because the day-care center became a gathering point of supplies, information, and people in the wake of the disaster, the nursery teachers had to deal with the distribution of supplies as well as with the work of educating the children. Though the volunteers worked to encourage the children, a constant stream of events meant that some of the comfort of the everyday routine was lost. We also spoke to a volunteer nursery teacher who experienced unease about aftershocks and subsequent possible tsunami in the devastated areas, as she worked to provide education to the children alongside nursery teachers hurt by the disaster. Because she did not receive sufficient support, she grew tired and eventually became a "hidden victim."
