A method of in vivo measurement of the thermophysical properties of biological tissues is developed. The thermal conductivity and other thermophysical properties of living tissues are measured by means of the modified contact method with a maximum error of ±20%. This method is an improvement of the contact-unsteady method: A solid cylindrical probe adving a uniform temperature which is different from that of the tissue is brought into contact with the object surface and the change of the temperature inside the probe is measured and recorded from this instant on. Since the thermal properties of the probe material are known in advance, those of the tissue can be derived from the result of the transient two-body heat conduction analysis. A major advantage of this method over others is that it causes no destruction at all of the tissue, while a disadvantage is that only the properties in the vicinity of the surface are measurable. The same technique can be applied to the study on the characteristics of the local thermal sensation of the human skin. The result of the preliminary experiment is also introduced in the present report.
