The IP packets sent by the end user input the edge node of the capsulation network, and are encapsulated to yield internal packets of the network, and as such are transferred across the network. The internal packets have 48-bit long addresses; the upper 32-bits hold "Node Address (NA)", the lower 16-bits hold "End Point Address (EA)". NA is given to nodes, i.e., edge-nodes and/or routers, while EA is given to end points of the nodes. Each EP of an edge-node connects to user's site via a circuit. Router accepts an internal packet, which includes destination address NA‖EA, extracts destination NA, inputs the NA to its routing table, obtains the number of the interface corresponding to NA, and outputs the internal packet, via the router interface identified by the interface number. The routing table does not include subnet masks. At the destination side, the edge node receives the packet, restores the IP packet, and sends it to the circuit, via EP identified by the EA. Size of routing table reflects the number of nodes inside the network. The routing procedure proposed herein is simple compared to an MPLS router. To better understand the relation between ID/locator separation and the proposed routing technology, see clause 5. We think that the new routing method is useful in creating an optical router that offers high speed processing.
