As more and more networks roll out, it is becoming common for a single end-device to participate in more than one network at a time. An end-device that utilizes multiple interfaces to connect to the network is said to be multihomed. To transfer an ongoing session from one channel to another, a device relies on the Vertical Handover process. Mobile Stream Transmission Protocol (mSCTP) is a protocol that supports vertical handover for mobile devices. The mSCTP enables a mobile device to dynamically add or delete IP addresses during an active association using Round-Trip Time (RTT) and Bandwidth to estimate the quality of available paths. In this paper, we propose a new approach that not only takes RTT and bandwidth into consideration, but also considers the Quality of Service (QoS) of the ongoing application. We argue that QoS of an application is an important factor that must be considered when selecting new paths because different applications. Our approach also reduces the frequency of handover because handover is only initiated when the quality of the current path does not meet the QoS of an ongoing application. The simulation results show that our approach has better performance than the standard SCTP-based path switching mechanism.
