Japan is the second largest coal importer in the world. Almost 100% of coal used in Japan is imported and about 80% are from Australia and Indonesia. Therefore, the diversification of suppliers is important challenge for the government toward ensuring the stable supply of coal. It is essential to strengthen the relationship with main coal supply countries such as Australia and Indonesia. In addition, building a relationship with countries expected to be new suppliers, such as Mozambique and Mongolia is important in the coking coal sector. In the steam coal sector, exports from North America and Columbia are expected depending on future global coal prices and supply/demand. The government will support the efforts of Japanese businesses for these diversifications. Furthermore, the government will also support R&D for IGCC, IGFC and A-USC to realize more efficient coal-fired power generation as coal could be continuously a base load power resources in Japan. However, since the contribution of a domestic effort to reducing CO_2 emission in the sector of coal fired power generation is quite limited, the government will also promote the oversea deployment of the advanced clean coal technologies by Japanese businesses, which could contribute to resolving the global warming issue considerably.
