A comprehensive investigation for the CCS demonstration project in Japan was started by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) just before the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in 2008. Three candidate sites for the project, Nakoso-Iwaki Oki, Kitakyushu and Tomakomai, were selected for further geological surveys and engineering studies. For Tomakomai, after 3D seismic survey and two survey wells drilling, METI decided to implement a CCS demonstration project from 2012 to 2020. METI also decided to continue 2D seismic survey at Kitakyushu in 2012 and to discontinue surveys at Nakoso-Iwaki Oki after the Great East Japan Earthquake hit on March 11th, 2011. In the Tomakomai Project, CO_2 will be captured using amine-base solvent from PSA-off gas generated at a hydrogen production unit in an oil refinery in Tomakomai City. Captured CO_2 will be compressed and injected through two inclined wells which will be drilled from coast to two reservoirs under the sea bed. The project was started in 2012 with engineering, procurement and construction work for capture and compression facilities, drilling injection wells and constructing monitoring systems. Injection of CO_2 is planned to start in 2016 for three years followed by two years post-injection monitoring.
