Objective: To consider effective approach of specific counseling guidance by examining its effects. Study Design and Methods: The subjects were 2861 participants in the T city who were covered by the national health insurance and had specific health checkup in 2008 and 2009. 482 persons were selected by the criteria of specific counseling guidance. We examined the effects of the specific counseling guidance for them. Further, for 301 participants out of 482, we analyzed the association of the achievement of their targets and the contents of their objectives for behavioral modification.Results: Compared with participants who did not have guidance, those who received guidance significantly improved their stages of behavior and reduced body weight and abdominal circumference. To decrease weight and abdominal circumference, it was effective for men to lay out a goal for keeping a diary. Behavioral modification correlated with the achievement of the target of body weight and abdominal circumference. Setting a target for walking contributed to behavioral modification for men.Conclusion: Behavioral modification by specific counseling guidance improved the stages of behavior and reduced body weight and abdominal circumference. For men, effective objectives were walking and keeping diary.
