An admission system of Kumamoto National College of Technology has been modified since April, 2010, inaccordance with the integrative reorganization of the College. On submitting an application, students can apply to up tosix departments. Therefore, the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AC) includes students whose firstchoice is not necessarily to study at AC, which means that teachers need to make efforts to motivate students after startingtheir college education. Therefore, several practices have been attempted through the first school year to comprehendminds of the first graders about studying at AC and to motivate them. As a result, it is revealed that, compared to thebeginning of the year, students with affirmative minds to learning have increased after one-year practices. It can be saidthat this result indicates the effectiveness of our educational practices to motivate first grade students.
