A method is described for analyzing field failure data when products may be discarded even before they have failed. It uses a model describing the relationship between the failure time of a specific component within a product and the discard time of the product. The model uses p to represent the probability that a product is discarded if a component fails. Based on this model, a closed-form maximum likelihood estimator of the failure time distribution of the component is derived when the value of p is given, The upper and lower bounds of the failure probability estimator are given when there is no information on p. Both analytical and simulation results showed that the proposed estimator is valid and gives a conservative estimate
