This study attempts to elucidate the process of building fluency in reading while tracing the experience process of learners who practice extensive reading. The focus is on how changes are induced in the learner's reading when extensive reading is exercised, not only when engaging in silent reading but also when reading aloud. A questionnaire survey and interview were conducted after two subjects exercised extensive reading; a qualitative study was then conducted by analyzing this data using the M-GTA method. During extensive reading, the learners faced difficulties in which they became unable to understand the text. However, as they coped with the situation and processed a large volume of text, their processing of the text became automated and led to improvements in their reading speed and level of understanding. Concerning reading aloud, it was confirmed that they could acquire vocal fluency through repetition if they paid attention to the correctness of accents, rhythms, and intonations. Practicing extensive reading by reading aloud offers repeated semantic processing with regard to vocabulary, syntactic structure, and theory of phonetics. This facilitates the automation of knowledge processing and, as a result, confirms the significance of extensive reading, which can contribute to the acquisition of fluency.
