The purpose of this paper is to clarify the status of GAIRAIGO in Japanese teaching by surveying the percentage of total vocabulary in four kinds of Japanese textbooks that are split into intermediate and advanced or continued intermediate level, using the textbook's vocabulary index. These are compared with the Test Content Specification of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The result shows that (1) The propotion of GAIRAIGO in three textbooks is higher of the intermediate level. (2) The more recently published, the higher the percentage of GAIRAIGO is in three advanced or continued intermediate level. (3) There is a possible influence of JLPT on Japanese textbooks desighned specially for use by students wishing to be enrolled into a Japanese university. (4) JLPT needs to be revised to include more advanced GAIRAIGO.
