In April 1998 we volunteer teachers of Japanese, started to train ourselves as teachers of Japanese, but at the same time, to teach Japanese to foreigners who live in our city and its neighboring towns. A question mark was always in our mind - is it justifiable for us, amateur teachers, to dare to teach these foreigners? Recently we had a time of review, reflection and self-criticism. We discussed among ourselves many points freely and candidly. How can we improve our teaching? How can we meet the real needs of the learners? Was there any positive merit in teaching Japanese while learning how to teach it? Is this an advisable sort of approach, which we can recommend to similar-minded volunteers in this country where we can find increasing number of foreigners. What can volunteer teachers like us do, and cannot or should not do? This is a report, based on these discussions.
