The economic growth rate for China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has occupied top position among all the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions nationwide for six years in a row from 2003 on, and against the background of its abundant natural resources, such as minerals including coal and rare earth elements, it is enhancing its presence within the Chinese economy. Furthermore, the degree of attention focused on it also as a major food-producing region of China, centered on the grain-growing region of the eastern part of the autonomous region, is rising. Focusing on the economy of Inner Mongolia, Autonomous Region this paper, along with undertaking an analysis of the factors supporting high growth of recent years and the potential thereof, considers the challenges (constraining factors) for the subsequent sustainable development of the economy of Inner Mongolia.
