This paper discusses the modes of communication observed in the offices of Japanese companies from an architectural point of view. Previous studies have shown that Japanese people tend to depend heavily on the context in which communication takes place. Such communication is categorized as an integral type, since the meanings of words are decided upon mutual agreement between the involved parties. However, these prior studies evaluated only national averages. By contrast, this study examines companies at the sub-organization level and probes the degrees of dependence on context of people in different job categories. The results reveal the following two facts: (1) While a highly context-dependent communication style predominates at the majority of Japanese companies, it is inappropriate to generalize all Japanese companies as a simple, homogeneous group; there are also companies in which communication does not significantly depend on context. This suggests that some companies have structures that are modular rather than integral in nature. (2) People in different job categories working at different stages of the value chain depend on context when communicating with their co-workers to different degrees. Amplitude patterns observed in relation to this can be classified into echelon and linear patterns. The former are seen in main activities and the latter, which are narrower in amplitude, in support activities.
