We verified effectiveness of a simple, but empirically-useful method for improving English proficiency:script-memorization on the students at Ibaraki National Colleges of Thchnology(INCT). The averaged TOEIC score of those students is as low as 400, which is acknowledged equivalent to those of 2nd-year high school students. To address this issue, we first analyzed the score data obtained from 1st to 3rd-year students at INCT and confirmed the trend had been the same for the past three years. Next we gave script-memorization tasks to those students and found that the task results and their scores of an English proficiency test were positively correlated(R2:0.53). Given the fact that language learning should require at least 10,000 hours to complete and English classes of 4 hours per week only attein about 600 hours in 5-year education period, we concluded that the most important factor during English learning for the students is how the learning motivation could be maintained, which enables them to learn their target languages on their own. As a first step towards motivation-strengthening, we reviewed the used-to-be class design adopting mainly the grammar-translation method, and changed it to use short stories with only about 200 words in order to relieve the tedium, and instruct to memorize their scripts. A class-design based on the script-memorization results was then proposed.
