In this day of fewer children and an aging population, the number of children being born is decreasing so the number of grandchildren is also going down. As a result, the family structure is increasingly shifting from a three-generation family household to a nuclear family household, and more and more of the elderly are living as a couple or by themselves. For this paper, a questionnaire entitled "A measure of the relationship between grandchildren and their grandparents" was given at two high schools and universities. As well, I investigated the difference among the students enrolled in the nursing department and regular study department at the two high schools. I discovered that there was no difference among the two high schools related to grandchildren, but did see a trend in difference between the nursing department high school students and university students. This result can be thought to be influenced by the length of time that the grandchildren and grandparents have interacted with each other. Also, in the grandparents section, I found out that if grandparents were living with the grandchildren, or living close by. This is due to most university students living in an apartment because they came from another prefecture or would have to commute a long distance to school. Even among the high school students there were few who lived together or close to their grandparents demonstrating the increase of nuclear families. Japan, with its longevity society will see an increase in relationship time between grandchildren and grandparents in the future, but I would like to investigate further what sort of relationship is appropriate between them.
