The clinical category of psychosomatic diseases of the neuromuscular system contains numerous neurological diseases involving the autonomic nervous system, motor nervous system, or sensory nervous system. Basically, such diseases are functional disorders which exacerbate psychological stress, and are effectively handled with a psychological approach and psycho-physiological treatment. This paper describes the concept, diagnosis, and treatment of the representative psychosomatic neuromuscular diseases, i.e. chronic headaches, psychogenic dystonia, psychogenic vertigo, and other autonomic failures. Psychological therapy should be primarily based on the understanding of psychosocial background, and psychological treatments such as environmental conditioning and relaxation training, which are administered to recover patients' selfcontrol. The essential factors of such treatment are fundamentally common in psychosomatic diseases, and are clinically applicable to any disease in other categories which involve a psychological background.
