People need knowledge about grammar to use a language properly, both in their first language and in a foreign language. Unlike natural first language acquisition, when older people with a well-established first language learn a foreign language only in a classroom, they consciously learn the formal (morphological/syntactic) rules one by one. This deliberate process includes learning what each word means and how to write/pronounce it in the language. In the process of learning a foreign language in this way, transfer from a first language is often observed. In other words, learners tend to understand the structure of a foreign language through the knowledge of their first language. For example, since Japanese language has no articles, a Japanese learner of English often has difficulty understanding why articles are necessary in the English structure. Conversely, the structure of a foreign language sometimes makes sense when learners apply the structure to that of their first language. For instance, a Japanese learner who does not really understand the property of gerunds in English could apply the structure of the gerundial phrase successfully introducing change in the workplace to that of the nominalized phrase in Japanese umaku shokuba ni henka wo toriireru koto. Then the learner would find that adverbs (successfully and umaku) are used in common in both structures. This paper points out the importance of starting English education in general-education English courses at Japanese universities by first making students aware of their knowledge of English grammar if they have failed to acquire the appropriate English grammar at their junior and senior high-school classes.
