In spite of the rivalry and dislike between Oscar Wilde and Henry James, they seem to have taken some hints from each other's stories. But what is more important is the similarity in their basic strategy of storytelling. Wilde liked to create many mysterious people, and "The Sphinx Without a Secret" is a story that features aesthetic mystery. And Henry James's "The Friends of Friends" can be placed beside this short story of Wilde's when we think of the mysteriousness that is crucial to their writing style. In these stories delicate nuances and images that lie between the lines come more into focus than plots or characters. When the two authors are placed side by side, their well-known ambiguity or playfulness takes a clearer shape as a writing style.
