This paper intends to reveal how English teaching method utilizing multiple intelligences and scientific topics is effective for low motivated university students in a reading centered class. In theory, the mixtures of Gardner's topic-based instruction and a series of content-based instructions are adopted to integrate the content and language learning and to genuinely focus on individuality. In practice, 55 subjects are surveyed with C-tests, two questionnaires, and self-evaluation sheets. The results of this study show that the deliberate choice of academic topics heightens learners' motivation, understanding and satisfaction for the reading class, that the topic-based instruction improves both reading skills and vocabulary, and that reading activities with multiple intelligences for understanding lead to the acquisition of scientific knowledge and four language skills.
