In this paper the bending of a shaft with a transverse hole countersunk by a drillhas been investigated experimentally by means of the electroplating method. The experi- ment shows the mitigation of stress concentration resulting from countersinking a holeand the distribution of stresses in the neighborhood of the countersunk hole edge.The greatest strength of a shaft is obtained by getting the most suitable depth ofcountersinking and its stress concentration factor approaches the theoretical value 3 foran infinitely small hole in a tension field. In the bore, the stress concentrates atfour points on the cross section containing the axis of a hole and at a small distancebelow the countersink. A drill of point angle 90° and 118° are used in countersinkinga hole, and it is found that the former is more effective than the latter in miti- gating stress concentration.
