The author has already reported differences in morphological characteristics, chemical composition and properties, etc. of Dark-Red soils and Red soils in the eastern part of Mikawa district, Aichi prefecture, Japan. The purpose of this study is to make clear the main origin of the "dark-red" color itself, taking account of specific forming processes and characteristics of the Dark-Red soils derived from serpentine. From the results obtained, the author drew the following conclusions. 1) Color and chemical composition of each diameter fration are different from each other. 2) A large amount of Fe, Mn, and Ni is found in the clay fraction, its red color being affected by the amount and nature of Fe compounds, whereas the color value is dominated by the presence of Mn compounds. Dark-red clay was formed experimentally by adding Mn compounds to the red clay in which Fe was highly concentrated. 3) K and Na are highly concentrated, but other metal elements are very few in the yellow-colored silt fraction. 4) Fe, Cr, Al, and Ti are highly concentrated in the fine sand fraction largely consisting of black particles. The black particles with magnetism are made up of magnetite and magnesiochromite, judging from the elemental composition and x-ray analysis. 5) It was shown experimentally that the value and chroma were raised when the magnetic minerals were removed. Actually, the richer amount of magnetic minerals is contained in the Dark-Red soils, the darker is the soil color. The black magnetic minerals, therefore, are considered to play a major role in deciding the dark color.
