In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the coaching philosophy and techniques of"Dettmar Cramer" and"Ivica Osim", two foreign coaches who have contributed to the progress of Japanese soccer, by investigating their remarks published in books and literature and on the Internet. The following results were obtained: 1) The two coaches' coaching techniques were similar in that they provided verbal coaching that valued the characters and personalities that had developed from the environment and culture of the country they were coaching in. 2) Both coaches talked to individual players after carefully observing their individuality and abilities. 3) Dettmar Cramer used words to improve techniques and strategies while making use of the mental toughness of the Japanese players. 4) Ivica Osim considered" running" and" thinking ability" to be essential for compensating for physical shortcomings, and improved the effectiveness of training by selecting suitable words. The above results suggest that verbal coaching techniques involve an intellectual ability to select and use words based on an experiential knowledge of effective ways to use the words, specifically" when"," where", "to whom"," what", and" how" to use them.
