In Tanzania, the supply of drinking water is lacking both in quality and in quantity. There are areaswithout water service, and, even where there is water service, the color of the water may be light brown. To preserve health and life, purifying by filtration or boiling tap water or the water which people draw isnecessary. In this study, I examined the frequency of loose bowels, and, as risk factors of diarrhea, the filtrationand boiling of drinking water, having a refrigerator or not, and the custom of hand-washing. The resultsobtained were as follows:The percentage of those having loose bowels once a week was the highest among people in their 20's.The percentage of those having loose bowels 2-3 times a month was more than half of those in their 30'sand 40's. The percentage of those not washing their hands after coming home was high through allgenerations. The percentage of those not washing their hands after using the restroom, after cominghome, and before meals was the highest among those under 20 years old, and lowest among those over 50years old. It was recognized that factors which contribute to lowering the rate of diarrhea are increasingaccess to tap water, filtering and boiling tap water for drinking, and washing hands after using therestroom and before meals.
