The purpose of this study was to examine whether keyword captions would help EFL students improve their listening comprehension. This was the first attempt in the field of captioning in Japan. Five studies have already been published overseas on the effects. All of them confirmed the positive effect of keyword captions on listening comprehension, but their weakness was that the data were obtained from a one-day experiment. In this study, a 23-week experiment was conducted using feature movies to see the longitudinal effects of keyword captions on listening comprehension. In addition to an audio test, video tests were used as preand post-tests. The results indicated that keyword captions worked just as well as full script captions for transmitting the content of the movie segment. It is worth noting that students exposed to keyword captions have come to obtain information on keyword-unrelated questions as well as keyword-related questions. The researcher concluded that keyword captions reduced students' load of reading captions and that students had come to obtain a strategy for using keywords to cope with spoken English.
