The optimal energy mix is always considered in the time of energy crisis. Japan experienced a severe earthquake last March, followed by a catastrophic nuclear accident at Fukushima. Owing to the subsequent shortage in electric supply last summer, a stable energy supply is recognized as fundamental to national security. Optimal energy mix is considered based on energy security, economic efficiency, environmental issue, and in addition, energy safety. Optimal energy mix should be a best combination of various energy sources, and diversification of energy sources is necessary to diversify the risk in each energy sources. Conventionally, energy is supplied to consumers by the energy company. However, by the subsequent shortage of energy, the supply of energy by consumers themselves via flexible energy systems should be considered. The inland energy distribution system and demand side management as well as stable energy supply are important issues. To this end, we should consider development of flexible energy systems with the objective of making the public adaptive and resilient in the event of emergencies. In addition, East Asia energy demand is expected to increase rapidly, and may affect the world energy balance, so it must be the important factors to be taken into account.
