This study is an experiment-based study investigating what demotivates and prevents learners from becoming demotivated in the English classroom. Although in this decade there has been a serge in studying demotivation, most studies approached the issue of demotivation by surveying, such as questionnaire and interview. As profitable outcome, a number of demotivating factors for English learners have been identified, but how we should deal with the demotivators have yet to be investigated. Thus, in this study, an instructor conducted lessons to two groups for a certain period of time and asked the participants about what demotivated them and what prevented them from becoming demotivated in the lessons. How the motivation of those learners has fluctuated was also examined. The participants for this research were 66 university freshmen in total. The results reveal what actually demotivated them and what prevented them from being demotivated. The results also suggest that the learners' motivation increased in the third year of junior high school and high school, and declined after entering high school or university.
