In my undergraduate days I was bored with language descriptions based on the then-popular structuralistprinciples and came to be interested in the field of the history of English. Some of the historical changes inthe English language that appeared to turn in a certain direction although there was apparently no humanplanning really fascinated me. I pursued my interests in earlier forms of English,especially Late Middle English,at the graduate school of the University of Michigan,where I wrote a doctoral dissertation on the syntactic changes from Late Middle to Early Modern English,using the parallel texts of a medieval mystic workThe Cloud of Unknowing.I started to teach at Kobe College in 1972. During my early days here I was engaged in studies of the relationshipbetween form and meaning in Chaucer's writings and also in a project for compiling an Englishetymological dictionary initiated by Professor Yoshio Terasawa,which was finally published in 1997,17years after the first editorial meeting.English has a history of about 1500 years and is still changing. It would be unlikely that English will undergo such extensive grammatical or phonological changes as in the past.However,we can observe somesubtle changes in the use of English in various texts,influenced by various factors such as new modes ofcommunication,changes in reader expectations and sales objectives. I would like to continue to watchchanges in Modern English.
