In this paper major exhibitions and publications, especially those of monographs, focusing on a Victorian British painter John Everett Millais are examined. The author has tried to make an as complete list as possible in terms that it contains all the exhibitions and the book publications which included the name of the artist or any of his works in their titles. There is an astonishing fact that no major exhibition covering his entire careet had ever been held for more than a century since 1898, revealing oeverall neglect of Millais's art untile quite recent years. This inappreciative treatment was mostly caused by the attitude which perversely tried to judge the value of his works, especially his later works since 1860's, by the standard of the Pre-Raphelite principle, the Brotherhood whose major member he had been but only for five years at the beginning of his artistic career, and more importantly by the doctrine of avant-grade or modern art which had negated the value of works by Royal Academicians and many other Victorian artists. Only toward the end of the twentieth century the prevalent low evaluation of Millais's art, especially of his later work, began to be reconsidered. The re-evaluation keeps carreid on, accompanied by the carrying out of the comprehensive retrospective beginning at the Tate Britain in 2007 followed by visits to Ntherlands and Japan in 2008. By examining the past and recent publications at this point of time, this paper intends to clarify the current situation in the course of research history on the life and art of John Everett Millais.
