Abstract In this study, I analyze Japanese university students' use of the English motion verbs COME and GO, found in argumentative writings in the Japanese sub-corpus of the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE), and compare them to native English speakers' use of these verbs found in the corpus, Louvain Corpus of Native English Speakers (LOCNESS). In my previous research on the English and Japanese usage of these verbs, taking a cognitive-linguistic perspective (2011), I found that Japanese speakers usually take the speaker's viewpoint, and concluded that they tend to prefer subjective construal. In the current study, analyzing Japanese learners' real language in a corpus, I explore tendencies of Japanese learners' production of these English verbs and investigate whether Japanese subjective construal affects the usage of these verbs.
