Studies of the cultivation of Scutellaria baicalensis were conducted for two years in order to improve the productivity of the root. The effects on the root yield and flavonoid content of the following three conditions, i.e. bud picking (1), one inflorescence picking (2) and two inflorescence-pickings (3) were examined. The yields of the root (φ≧5 mm) cultivated with the conditions 1 and 2 were 2 times and 1.4 times, respectively, that of the control (with no flower-picking), while no significant effect was observed on the root yield by the use of condition 3. The flavonoid contents of the root (φ≧5 mm) cultivated with these three conditions were almost the same as that in the control. Considering these results and that the condition 1 requires troublesome operation throughout the flowering period we conclude that the one inflorescence-picking method is the most useful and the best for the practical cultivation of Scutellaria baicalensis.
