The influence of the climatic factors at various growth stage on the yield of opium, morphine content in opium and morphine yield of the early maturity-strain AW×I 4-53-6 of opium poppy, which was bred and cultivated at the Wakayama Experiment Station of Medicinal Plants, was examined during a period of 16 years from 1960 to 1975. The results were compared with those of Ikkanshu, another strain of opium poppy in Japan. 1. In the case of former strain, there is no significant correlation between the opium or morphine yield and the mean daily maximum temperature or the total precipitation during anthesis. And there is observed a negative correlation between the morphine content in opium and the mean diurnal range of temperature during anthesis. 2. Climatic factors during the capsule growth period have more pronounced effect on the opium and morphine yield than those in the opium harvesting period. 3. The degree of climatic effect on the productivity of opium poppy varies depending on the plant species. 4. Early maturity-strain seems to be less sensitive to various climatic factors affecting morphine productivity than Ikkanshu. 5. Greater mean diurnal range of temperature in anthesis and the capsule growth period, and longer total duration of sunshine in the opium harvesting period increase the morphine productivity of the early maturity-strain AW×I 4-53-6 of opium poppy.
