Concerning the cause of the blackening after fate and the formation of black-rings by stinging with a heated needle on plant-leaves, many explanations have been made previously. According to the reasarches made by the authors, they have learned that the phenomenon must be caused by the glycosides, which were mostly the derivatives of o- and p-dihydroxybenzene derivatives contained in the mesophyll cells of leaves. When a leaf is faded orsti nged by a heated needle, glycosidase and polyphenoloxydase in its cells are thought to act on the glycosides, decomposing and then oxidising them into quinones, which cause the black colouring combining with amino acids. To test the presence of such glycosides, the authors tried following experiments: 1. Microsublimation is performed with powdered leves treated previously with diluted hydrochloric acid. 2. Benz-p-quinone is added to the sublimate under a microscope; then inspections are made whether the black coloured compositions are produced. 3. Besides, instead of polyphenoloxydase, purpureo-salt is used. As the results of the experiments done on more than 100 species of plants, the authors have come to the following conclusion: 1. The leaves, which are the more liable to blacken after death, show the stronger intensity of the reaction. 2. The blackring is thought to be caused by the same reason, and the colouring of the ring is influenced according to the amount of contents of dihydr dxy benzepe derivatives in the epidermis. The fact, that in the well developed cuticle much triterpenoid is contained, has been proved according to the test with Liebermann's and other reactions on the leaves of about 600 species. Consequently, the authors have certified that the leaf which contains much phenol glycoside show clear black-rings, and that the leaf which developes the ring with large diameter has generally much triterpenoid.
