This article reports whether the format of multiple-choice listening tests influences the strategy use of test-takers of various listening proficiencies. The differences in test format examined in this study consisted in the presentation of the questions and options. Data were elicited from the immediate retrospective verbalizations of 28 Japanese university students. The results indicate that format difference had an effect on test-takers' strategy use regardless of their listening proficiency: significant differences were found in their use of metacognitive (selective attention), cognitive (note-taking), and test-taking (clues in the text) strategies. The results also show that listening proficiency affected test-takers' strategy use in every format: significant differences in strategy use were observed in their metacognitive (comprehension monitoring, performance evaluation, and problem identification), cognitive (creative elaboration), and test-taking strategies (skipping and matching the option with the text). The implications of these findings on test validity are discussed.
